How to request an emergency gas activation?
Are you about to move into your new home but forgot to request gas activation? While this step should ideally be completed as early as possible before moving in, there are solutions to ensure that when you settle in, your home is warm and fully equipped. The solution: emergency gas activation.
What is emergency gas activation?
Emergency gas activation can be requested when you need to use gas in your home as quickly as possible. In general, when moving home in France, it is recommended to subscribe to a gas contract with the supplier of your choice for your new property at least two weeks before your move-in date.
This allows your supplier to contact the network operator GRDF (the French gas distribution network manager) so that your gas meter can be activated as quickly as possible. If you have not met these deadlines or if your move took place earlier than expected, you can still request an emergency gas activation.

Who should you contact for emergency gas activation?
To quickly benefit from gas in your home, you must contact your gas supplier and explain your situation. They will then contact GRDF, which will activate your gas supply by offering either an “express” or “urgent” intervention. With an “express” intervention, your gas meter is activated within 2 working days. An “urgent” intervention is carried out in less than 24 hours.
If your request is made before 3 p.m., it may sometimes be handled the same day, and activation can be performed remotely if the gas supply to your home has not been cut off. Otherwise, a GRDF technician will need to visit your home. In the event of a gas cut-off due to unpaid bills, you will first need to settle your outstanding balance before requesting the restoration of your gas supply.

How much does emergency gas activation cost?
The prices for emergency gas activation are set by GRDF. They are therefore the same for all gas suppliers in France. For an “express” activation within 2 working days, expect to pay €59.31 incl. VAT*, and for an “urgent” activation within 24 hours, €143.01 incl. VAT. The fees related to emergency gas activation are billed directly by GRDF to your gas supplier, who will then include them on your first bill.
In the case of a gas cut-off due to unpaid bills, you can request an “express” restoration within 5 working days (instead of 10 days for the standard procedure) at a cost of €59.31 incl. VAT.
