Who Manages the Activation of Your Gas Meter?
If you are moving into a new home and want your gas meter activated, it’s important to request the service in advance so that natural gas is ready from day one. ENGIE explains the steps to follow, the timing, and the costs involved in this process.
When do you need to activate a gas meter?
A gas meter must be activated when you move into a new home and intend to use natural gas. You need to request activation to have the gas meter put in your name, even if the meter is already installed and the gas has not been cut.
If you are moving into a newly built home that is not yet connected to the gas network, your first step is to request a connection from GRDF (the French gas network operator).
How to open a gas meter?
You cannot activate a gas meter yourself. Only GRDF technicians are authorized to do so. During the intervention, the technician seals the installation, and tampering with these seals is legally prohibited.
The process differs depending on your situation:
Home already connected to gas: This is straightforward. If you are already an ENGIE customer, simply complete our moving form so the meter can be registered in your name. If you do not yet have a gas supplier, you must first subscribe to a contract. Your supplier will contact GRDF to schedule the activation of the gas meter.
Home not yet connected to gas: For a new building not yet connected, you first subscribe to a gas contract, then contact GRDF (by phone or via their website) to schedule a technician visit for the connection. Be ready to provide:
The exact address and details of your property
The desired capacity for your installation
A site plan if the network does not pass nearby

What are the timelines and costs for activating a gas meter?
To ensure a smooth move and have gas ready on arrival, it is recommended to request meter activation at least one week before moving in.
If your home is not yet connected, you should request the network connection from GRDF at least three weeks before your move.
The costs for gas meter activation are the same regardless of the supplier, as GRDF manages the gas network and sets the fees. Prices vary depending on whether the gas has been cut and the requested urgency of the intervention.
Gas cut at home:
Standard (within 5 days): €18.58*
Express (within 48 hours): €41.03*
Urgent (same day): €124.43*
A technician must visit the home to activate the meter.
Gas not cut:
Standard (within 5 days): €18.50*
No technician visit is required.
*Prices include taxes and are set by GRDF.
How is gas activation performed?
The key step is subscribing to a contract with a supplier of your choice. The supplier then forwards the activation request to GRDF, the network operator. A technician usually comes to open the meter to guarantee safety.
What is the timeline for gas activation?
The standard activation timeline, when gas has been cut, is 5 working days. It is recommended to submit your request at least a week before moving in. Faster options (48 hours or same day) are available but incur additional fees.
What are the costs for gas activation?
Fees are fixed by GRDF and listed in their service catalog. They vary depending on urgency:
Standard activation (5 days): €22.34 VAT included
Express activation (within 48 hours): €71.70 VAT included
Urgent activation (same day): €172 VAT included
Prices are valid until June 31, 2026.
