How do I read my natural gas meter?
Reading your natural gas meter is an important step because it allows you to measure your index, that is, your gas consumption and therefore calculate your bills accurately.
What is the purpose of reading a natural gas meter?
Reading your natural gas meter allows you to measure the volume of gas (in cubic meters) actually consumed by your household. Your bills are therefore based on your real consumption, rather than estimates.
The reading can be carried out by the natural gas distribution operator such as GRDF in France once or twice a year, or by the customer themselves several times a year. In all cases, the customer must allow the gas distributor access to the meter so that it can be read at least once a year.
This index is then transmitted to your gas supplier (ENGIE), which uses it to issue your bills. If no reading is carried out, your supplier will base your bill on an estimate provided by the distributor.
How to read your gas meter: instructions
To read your meter, you first need to locate it. It may be installed either inside your home (entrance, utility room, cellar, garage, etc.) or outside (on the landing, at the edge of your property, etc.).
The natural gas index to be recorded corresponds to the first five digits from the left displayed on the meter, these are the numbers shown on a black background. The digits on a red background should not be reported. This index corresponds to your gas consumption in cubic meters.
You will also find the meter’s serial number on the device, located below or above the barcode, as well as the “matricule gaz.” These correspond to the last three digits of the meter’s serial number.
Do not confuse the PCE with your gas meter serial number
The identification number of your installation (PCE – Point de Comptage et d’Estimation) is used to identify your gas connection point. This unique 14-digit code is permanently assigned to a property. It never changes, even when occupants move in or out.
Visible on your meter, the serial number may change if the device is replaced. It is linked only to the physical equipment. To find your PCE number, refer to your gas bill.

With Gazpar: no more manual meter readings!
The rollout in France of the new smart gas meter, Gazpar, developed by GRDF, has transformed how your gas consumption index is recorded. The Gazpar smart meter automatically collects your consumption data and sends it directly—twice a day—to the French gas distribution operator GRDF.
All data is encrypted and secure. It is then transmitted to your energy supplier.
This meter provides your actual consumption data, which is used as the basis for billing, rather than estimates as was the case with traditional mechanical gas meters.
With Gazpar, a technician visit is no longer required to read your meter.
How to read your gas meter step by step
- Your gas meter may be located inside or outside your home.
- Only read the first five digits on a black background from the left, which indicate your actual consumption in cubic meters.
- New Gazpar smart meters automatically transmit your consumption index. There is no need for manual readings or technician visits.
- You can find the serial number and matricule directly on your gas meter.
- To check whether you have a smart gas meter, look at the color of the casing: Gazpar meters are yellow.
With M@ Relève, read your meter independently
The M@ Relève service is simple: every two months, you receive an email and a notification via your Customer Space or mobile app inviting you to enter your index. You read your natural gas meter by noting the first five digits. You then submit this index to ENGIE via your Customer Space or the ENGIE Particuliers mobile app. Your next gas bill is calculated based on your actual consumption rather than estimates.
You automatically benefit from the M@ Relève service if you are eligible.
With Gazpar, there is no longer any need to perform manual readings. Discover the GRDF smart meter.

How is a gas bill calculated?
Three steps are required to calculate your annual gas bill:
Step 1: Your supplier calculates the difference between your current index (in m³) and that of the previous year. The result represents the volume of gas delivered to your home, in cubic meters.
Step 2: This figure is multiplied by a conversion factor to determine the actual amount of energy consumed, expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- Step 3: Finally, your supplier multiplies this number of kWh by the price per kWh specified in your contract. This gives you the total amount of your gas bill.
What should I do if my bill amount is different from what I expected?
If you are an ENGIE customer and have created your free Customer Space, you can access all your invoices in the “My bills” section.
If you notice an error on your bill, go to the Help & Contact page, under the “Bills and Contracts” section, and contact us using your preferred method. ENGIE advisors will review your bill, and you will receive a corrected invoice if an issue is confirmed.
What should you do if your gas meter has a problem?
Does your gas meter appear faulty or not working properly? If you are an ENGIE customer, first contact our customer service team. A technician from the network operator (GRDF) can then visit your home to check and, if necessary, repair your installation.
