Power outage without tripping the breaker: causes and solutions?

Has your power just gone out? At first glance, it may not be due to your circuit breaker. What should you do? Here are the right steps to identify the cause of an electrical outage and restore power to your home as quickly as possible.

Power outage: how to check that the breaker hasn’t tripped?

The first thing to check in the event of a power outage is whether the issue is local or general. To do this, simply look at your electrical panel and see whether your circuit breaker has tripped. If it is in the “off” position, the outage is limited to your home. The cause may be a short circuit or an insulation fault in your electrical system.

In most cases, when the meter trips, it is due to electrical overload. This means you have exceeded the power subscribed on your electricity meter. Concretely, too many electrical appliances are running at the same time, and the power drawn from the grid exceeds your subscribed capacity. To find out your subscribed power, check your electricity contract. Power is expressed in kVA in France. This information also appears on your bill.

Power outage without tripping: what are the possible causes?

A power outage without the electrical panel tripping can have several origins. Below are the main ones. We detail each type of outage further in the article.

Type of outage

Likely cause

Who to contact

General outage

Incident or maintenance on the electricity grid

Enedis

General outage ?

Occasional load shedding

RTE via Ecowatt

Micro-outage

Grid maintenance issue or severe weather

Enedis

Unpaid bill

Non-payment more than 14 days after multiple reminders

Your energy supplier

General outage

If your breaker has not tripped, the outage may not be limited to your home. Look outside to check whether street lighting is working and whether neighboring homes have power. You can also ask your neighbors if they are experiencing the same issue.

Maintenance or repair work on the Enedis grid

If the street lights are off, it is likely a general power outage. This may be due to:

• An incident on the electricity network (a fallen tree on a power line, strong winds damaging cables, etc.)

• Maintenance carried out by Enedis, the French electricity distribution network operator.

To confirm whether it is a general outage, Enedis provides an online diagnostic tool. If the platform confirms a localized outage, the only option is to wait until power is restored in your neighborhood.

Electricity load shedding

Exceptionally, a general outage may correspond to load shedding (“délestage”), a temporary planned power cut designed to relieve pressure on the grid. This happens very rarely when the grid is under strain during peak consumption.

This means that national electricity demand exceeds production at a given moment. To protect essential facilities (hospitals, schools, etc.), RTE, the French electricity transmission system operator, cuts power in certain areas. These outages without tripping last a maximum of two hours before returning to normal.

To be notified of potential load shedding in your municipality, you can sign up for the “vigilance coupure” alert on RTE’s Ecowatt online platform. You will receive notifications by email or SMS.

Micro power outage without tripping

If your neighborhood has not experienced an outage, the issue may originate in your home. In some cases, micro-outages occur. Appliances briefly switch off for a fraction of a second and then restart. These micro-cuts are often barely noticeable and do not trip the breaker.

This usually indicates a maintenance issue on the electricity network. It can also be caused by severe weather (heavy rain, heatwaves) damaging power lines. Unfortunately, as a private individual, there is little direct action you can take. If this happens frequently, contact Enedis.

Unpaid bill and power outage

Finally, another possible situation is an unpaid electricity bill. An electricity supplier may request that Enedis disconnect a household’s power supply.

This does not happen suddenly. Your supplier is legally required to notify you. At ENGIE, in the event of non-payment, we contact customers via:

  • Email
  • Two formal regulatory letters
  • SMS messages and phone calls

To restore power, you must pay the full amount of your electricity bill. Your supplier will then contact Enedis to reconnect the line.

We understand that financial difficulties can arise. If this is your situation, contact ENGIE as soon as you receive the first reminder. Our advisors will help identify solutions and financial support options (payment plans, access to the “Fonds de Solidarité Logement”, etc.). To anticipate unexpected hardship, our Bill Insurance option may also help.

Power outage and the winter truce (trêve hivernale)

The winter truce runs every year from November 1 to March 31. During this period, your electricity supplier is not allowed to request a power cut from Enedis, even in the case of unpaid bills.

However, the supplier may reduce the subscribed power. The electricity meter is then limited, and the household can only consume a restricted amount of electricity at any given time. This measure cannot always be applied. Beneficiaries of the “chèque énergie” (government energy voucher) are protected from power reductions during this period.

Power outages: key takeaways

A power outage without the breaker tripping may be linked to several situations:

  1. A general outage due to a grid incident or maintenance operation.

  2. Planned load shedding by RTE.

  3. A micro-outage caused by severe weather or insufficient grid maintenance.

  4. An unpaid bill.

  5. For general outages, contact Enedis. For load shedding, RTE provides alerts via the Ecowatt platform.

  6. Finally, in case of payment issues, remember to contact your electricity supplier.

How to contact Enedis in the event of a power cut?

In case of a power outage, you can contact the Enedis emergency service at 09 72 67 50 XX (replace XX with your French department number). This hotline is available 24/7.

How to avoid breaker trips without changing your subscribed power?

Increasing your subscribed power may result in a more expensive contract. To avoid modifying your plan, try spreading your electricity use throughout the day. For example, run your washing machine at one time and your water heater at another. This is especially beneficial if you have a “heures pleines / heures creuses” meter (peak/off-peak hours). By scheduling appliances during off-peak hours, you benefit from a lower kWh price. These eco-friendly habits also help reduce your bills.

Is Ecowatt free?

Yes, it is free. Ecowatt is a tool set up by RTE to indicate the “electricity weather forecast.” It allows you to check for potential load shedding in your region.
