How has the gas price evolved until today?

According to figures referenced by the French Ministry for Territorial Planning and Ecological Transition, the average price of natural gas excluding taxes (HT) for households in France was approximately €0.092/kWh in 2024.

More concretely, for a typical consumption of 11,000 to 12,000 kWh per year, this corresponds to an annual energy budget of around €1,470 to €1,600 including taxes per year.

After noticeable increases in October (+1.65%) and November (+2.05%), mainly due to supply costs ahead of winter and fluctuations in the wholesale market, the benchmark price had remained relatively stable. However, in March it rises again by nearly 4%.

Benchmark gas price (prix repère gaz): the reference indicator for natural gas

Introduced by the “Commission de régulation de l’énergie” (CRE) in May 2023, the benchmark gas price is a neutral and transparent indicator designed to serve as a reference following the end of the regulated gas tariffs (tarifs réglementés du gaz) in France.

Published every month, it acts as a comparison benchmark for consumers and as a reference for suppliers when designing their offers.

This price takes into account supply, distribution and storage costs, reflecting the real evolution of the natural gas market. However, it is not mandatory for suppliers, who remain free to set their own prices.

Why doesn’t your bill always go down?

Have you noticed that your gas bill does not always decrease? Several factors can explain this:

  • Taxes and distribution costs:
The price of gas does not depend only on market prices. A significant part of your bill corresponds to taxes and distribution costs (transport, storage and network distribution). These costs, including the TICGN tax (French domestic natural gas consumption tax), are generally stable, although some may increase slightly in 2025.
  • A colder winter leading to higher consumption:
When temperatures drop, heating systems run more often. As a result, gas consumption increases — and so does the bill.
  • The key role of the thermostat:
According to the Service des données et études statistiques (SDES), heating represents around 60% of a household’s energy consumption in Paris. Even a small adjustment can therefore make a significant difference. According to ADEME figures from October 2022, lowering the temperature by just 1°C can reduce energy consumption by around 7%. Conversely, increasing the thermostat by one degree can significantly increase consumption.

How can you reduce your gas bill right now?

Choose the gas offer that best suits your needs

The first step to better control your bill is to check that your contract still matches your needs. There are two main types of gas offers:

  • Fixed-price offers: they guarantee a stable tariff throughout the contract, making it easier to manage your budget over the long term.

  • Variable-price offers: they follow market price fluctuations, both increases and decreases.

Adopt energy-saving habits every day

Your habits and the maintenance of your equipment play a key role in your energy consumption. A few simple actions can have a significant impact:

  • Set your heating to 19°C in living areas.

  • Maintain your boiler once a year to ensure optimal efficiency.

  • Install a smart thermostat to better control your heating, which can reduce energy consumption by up to 15% per year.

  • Close shutters at night and improve insulation around windows and doors.

  • Bleed your radiators regularly for more even heat distribution.

Renovate your home to consume less

To go further, energy renovation remains the most effective and sustainable lever. Insulation, heating regulation, replacing an old boiler with a condensing boiler or a hybrid heat pump… The savings on your energy bill can be immediate and significant.

Several financial support programs are available:

  • MaPrimeRénov’

  • Energy Savings Certificates (CEE)

  • Energy vouchers (chèque énergie) for lower-income households

ENGIE can support you with your renovation projects and help you identify the available financial aid to sustainably reduce your energy consumption while improving your home comfort.

ENGIE: greener gas for a more sustainable future

At ENGIE, the energy transition is not just a concept, it is a concrete commitment. Several initiatives are being implemented to reduce carbon emissions and support you in managing your energy consumption:

  • Development of biomethane injected into the French gas network, a locally produced renewable energy.

  • Support for local renewable energy production, encouraging sustainable solutions close to home.

  • Personalized support to help households better understand and manage their gas consumption.

Some ENGIE offers now include a share of biomethane, a green gas produced in France, helping reduce your carbon footprint without changing your equipment.

Gas price in February–March: key takeaways

  1. The average benchmark gas price stands at €0.14010/kWh including taxes in March 2026, representing an increase of +3.93% compared with February 2026.

  2. A high bill may be due to taxes, distribution costs, or simply colder weather. Simple actions (setting the thermostat to 19°C, maintaining your boiler, improving insulation) can immediately and effectively reduce consumption.

  3. For a long-term reduction, it is essential to consider energy renovation (insulation, boiler replacement) and to choose offers that include biomethane (green gas), which suppliers such as ENGIE are actively developing.

Is the benchmark gas price the final price?

No. The benchmark price is only a reference indicator. Each supplier remains free to set its own tariffs, including taxes and distribution costs.

What is the purpose of a fixed-price contract?

It guarantees a stable kWh price for the duration of the contract. This protects you from sudden price increases, but it also means you do not immediately benefit from market price decreases.

What is green gas?

Green gas refers to biomethane, a renewable energy produced in France from organic waste. ENGIE integrates it into certain offers to help reduce carbon emissions.

How is the price of natural gas for households calculated?

The price you pay on your natural gas bill (the kWh price) is composed of three main elements:

  1. Supply costs: this is the purchase price of gas on international markets. It is the most volatile component.
  2. Distribution costs: these correspond to transporting gas through networks managed by GRDF or local distribution companies to your home. This cost is regulated and included both in your subscription and in the kWh price.
  3. Taxes and contributions: these are set by the French government and apply to both the gas consumed and the subscription. The most well-known is VAT, although it is not the only one.
