How to change your gas tariff option?

Rédigé par ENGIE

Mis à jour le

The price of gas varies depending on several factors: your geographical location, your consumption… and the tariff option you are subscribed to. In fact, the cost of gas is split into two parts: a fixed subscription fee and a variable bill based on your actual consumption. How can you find out your tariff option? And how can you change it if it no longer suits your needs?

The difference between a tariff option and a tariff zone

First of all, it is important to distinguish between your gas tariff option and your tariff zone. The latter depends on the geographical location of your home. Indeed, the price per kWh of gas is not exactly the same across the entire French territory, which is divided into 6 tariff zones. These zones were established when the gas network was created in France and are designed to reflect, in the gas price, the different distances between where the gas is stored and where it is consumed. Finding out your tariff zone is very simple: it is indicated on every gas bill you receive. Only homes heated with gas are concerned by tariff zones. Properties that use gas only for cooking or for hot water benefit from a gas price that is independent of their geographical location.

Gas tariff options: how do they work?

 Gas tariff options, on the other hand, have nothing to do with your geographical location and do not directly affect the price of gas, but they play an important role in calculating your final bill. Tariff options depend on the type of gas-powered installation in your home or business premises. There are 5 gas tariff options:

  • Option T1: for buildings consuming less than 4,000 kWh/year, i.e. those using gas only for cooking or hot water, for example;
  •  Option T2: for buildings consuming between 4,000 and 300,000 kWh/year. This corresponds to individual heating systems and small boiler rooms;

  •  Option T3: for buildings consuming between 300,000 and 5 million kWh/year;

  •  Option T4: for buildings consuming more than 5 million kWh/year, in other words industrial sites;

  •  Option TP: this applies to industrial users who can request a direct connection to the gas transmission network, without going through the local gas supplier*.

Good to know

Gas prices are revised every year on July 1st. Make sure to take this into account when planning your energy budget and estimating the price per cubic meter (m³) of gas.

Steps to change your tariff option

 Were you previously using natural gas only for cooking and now plan to switch to gas heating? You will need to change your tariff option. To do so, you must contact your gas supplier by phone, email or post. They will then forward your request to the distribution network operator. This is also a good opportunity to make sure your contract matches your current needs. Discover our no-commitment gas offer.
