Air Conditioning Installation Costs: Our Complete Guide

Rédigé par ENGIE

Mis à jour le

Installation costs can vary significantly from one air conditioning system to another. A portable monobloc air conditioner requires no installation, while a mono-split or multi-split air conditioning system requires professional installation and potentially extensive work. In addition, the type of system and the size of the area to be cooled will also affect the overall cost.

Are you looking for an air conditioning system to stay comfortable during periods of extreme heat and keep your home cool? Split systems, ready-to-use reversible monobloc units, Inverter systems, or multi-split air conditioners installed by a professional the choice is extensive. What are the current installation costs? How does installation work? What should you check with the professional who will install and maintain your system? Our complete guide answers all your questions.

What is included in the cost of air conditioning installation?

Price differences are generally based on the same set of criteria, starting with the type of system itself. For example, a mono-split air conditioning system will typically cost less to install than a multi-split system. Naturally, the number of indoor units also impacts the budget, since installing each unit can take up to a full working day depending on the type of system and the complexity of the project.

The quotation should provide a detailed estimate of your project and a breakdown of the services included. In general, the document contains the following information: the installer’s travel expenses, installation of the air conditioning system and its units (indoor and/or outdoor), electrical connections, and system commissioning (verification and adjustment of power output, temperature settings, and airtightness). Some quotations also include the price of the equipment itself, which varies depending on the model selected. Take the time to review and compare the proposals from the professionals you contact. It is also advisable to request several quotations before making your decision.

Calculating air conditioning costs based on floor area

It is very difficult to provide an installation cost per square metre because some expenses are fixed, while others do not necessarily increase proportionally with the size of the property. As a result, the price per square metre can vary considerably, sometimes by a factor of three or more. In practice, only a qualified professional can provide an accurate estimate after visiting your home. Once you have the total cost, you can divide it by the area to be cooled to determine the price per square metre.

Installation cost guide for air conditioning systems

To estimate the budget required to install and commission your air conditioning system, use the pricing guide below, based on figures observed across various professional installers' websites. Please note that these prices include installation but are provided for guidance only. They reflect typical market prices observed in France in 2025.

Installation and commissioning costs

Including VAT

Mono-split air conditioning

€1,200 to €2,000

Monobloc air conditioning

€700 to €1,500

Bi-split air conditioning

€2,500 to €4,000

Tri-split air conditioning

€4,000 to €7,000

Quadri-split air conditioning

€6,000 to €11,000

These figures provide useful benchmarks, but it is important to remember that installation costs vary. Even for equivalent systems, prices can differ due to numerous factors that only an installer can accurately assess. Every project is unique because every home is different, and the more complex the installation, the higher the cost is likely to be.

Request quotations from several installers and compare them to secure the best price while keeping your budget under control. Be sure to check whether the quoted amount includes both the equipment and installation costs, or installation services only.

Portable air conditioners: no installation costs to budget for

There are no additional installation costs for portable monobloc air conditioners. These units are mounted on wheels and simply require you to position the hot air exhaust hose through an opening in the home, usually a window. These are temporary cooling solutions that can generally cool only one room at a time. However, their efficiency is typically lower because the exhaust outlet is rarely perfectly sealed.

Financial assistance for air conditioning installation

There is currently no direct financial support available for installing an air conditioning system. There is only one exception in the form of indirect support. For existing homes and apartments in France that are not newly built, a reduced VAT rate of 10% applies to labour costs for installation.

However, reversible air-to-water heat pumps may qualify for financial assistance. Although they do not operate in the same way as an air conditioner, they can help cool a home to a certain extent.

Installez un climatiseur pour rester au frais

Un climatiseur réversible (ou pompe à chaleur air-air) vous permet de rester au frais l'été, mais aussi de vous chauffer plus efficacement l'hiver.

How is an air conditioning system installed?

Depending on the type of air conditioning system selected, the installation process will differ. A wall-mounted monobloc air conditioner can be installed relatively quickly, whereas a split system may require significantly more installation time depending on the number of units involved.

Installing an air conditioning system requires compliance with basic safety rules (protective equipment, adequate working space, and so on) as well as the manufacturer's recommendations. Failure to follow these requirements may invalidate the manufacturer's warranty in the event of a fault.

Don't forget to obtain permission from your local town hall before installing your air conditioning

To install a split air conditioning system in France, you must obtain approval from your local town hall, as the outdoor unit is attached to the exterior wall of the property. You will need to submit a declaration of works and obtain municipal approval whether you live in a house or an apartment.

If you live in an apartment, approval from the co-ownership association (copropriété) is also required. If you are a tenant, you must additionally obtain permission from your landlord.

The different stages of installation work

Before installing an air conditioning system, the installation location must be selected. The professional carrying out the work will assess several criteria, including:

  • The strength of the wall where the unit will be mounted,

  • Adequate clearance around the unit to maximise airflow,

  • The absence of nearby heat sources,

  • The absence of nearby trees (for outdoor units),

  • A location sufficiently distant from windows for outdoor units, which may generate noise.

The installation cost of a mono-split system differs from that of a multi-split system because the required work is not the same. Faster to install, a mono-split air conditioner requires only two units connected by refrigerant piping. A multi-split system takes longer because multiple indoor units must be connected to a single outdoor compressor. Nevertheless, installing a split air conditioning system generally follows the same key stages:

  • Drilling Refrigerant pipes and connection cables require openings through walls. This is a necessary part of the installation process and should be anticipated when planning the project.

  • Connections – The indoor units are connected to the outdoor unit. This stage also includes the electrical connection.

  • Checks and testing – This is the most critical stage. The installer verifies that the system has been installed correctly by carrying out an airtightness test.

Installing your reversible air conditioner yourself: partly possible

If you are comfortable with DIY projects, you may install much of the equipment yourself. Simply make sure that you have all the necessary components required for the installation.

However, please note that commissioning and verification of proper operation must be carried out by a qualified professional authorised to handle refrigerants.

In other words, you can complete the physical installation yourself, but you will still need a certified professional for all operations involving refrigerant gases and for commissioning the system.

Who should you contact to install your air conditioning system?

  • Unless you intend to carry out the installation yourself, you generally have two options:

  • Use the retailer that sold the equipment (a large retail chain or DIY store),

Hire an independent professional (heating engineer, HVAC specialist, or refrigeration technician).

Large retailers and DIY stores work with qualified professionals before offering installation services. However, to benefit from these services, you will usually need to purchase the equipment directly from the store and select the installation package option. ENGIE can also support you with the installation of an air conditioning system.

Check the certifications of the professional who will install your system

To ensure that the manufacturer's warranty remains valid and to guarantee both safety and peace of mind, choose professionals who hold the following certifications:

  • Qualifélec (certifies the quality of electrical studies and individual heating and air conditioning installations),

  • Qualibat (certifies the quality of thermal installations),

  • Qualiclimat (certification specifically designed for SMEs specialising in air conditioning installations).

Professionals appointed by DIY retailers and major retail chains generally hold the required qualifications. Compare certifications carefully and consider them alongside the quotation provided.

Key points to remember about air conditioning installation costs

  1. The cost of installing an air conditioning system depends mainly on the type of equipment (reversible system, heat pump, etc.), the number of split units, and the number of square metres and therefore rooms to be heated or cooled.

  2. Some air conditioners and heat pumps provide both heating and cooling. Systems with this dual functionality are referred to as “reversible” systems.

  3. Depending on the model, you may be able to install a reversible air conditioner yourself by following the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Installing a fixed air conditioning system always requires installation work, with the exception of portable monobloc air conditioners.

  5. Commissioning must always be carried out by a qualified professional in order to maintain the manufacturer's warranty.

What types of air conditioning systems can be installed in a home?

The main types are monobloc systems (portable or wall-mounted, without an outdoor unit), mono-split systems (one indoor unit and one outdoor unit), and multi-split systems (several indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit).

How much does air conditioning installation cost depending on the system chosen?

Typical prices including VAT and installation vary significantly:

  • Monobloc: €700 to €1,500

  • Mono-split: €1,200 to €2,000

  • Multi-split: from €2,500 (bi-split) up to €11,000 (quadri-split).

What work is required to install an air conditioning system?

Installing a split system requires drilling through walls to route refrigerant piping and connection cables between the indoor and outdoor units.

How is an air conditioning system installed step by step?

Installation generally includes several stages: selecting the location, drilling, connecting the indoor and outdoor units, completing the electrical connection, and finally commissioning and airtightness testing, which must be performed by a qualified professional.

How long does professional air conditioning installation take?

Installation can take time, particularly for multi-split systems. Depending on project complexity, installing a single unit may require up to a full working day.

Can an air conditioning system be installed in an apartment governed by a co-ownership association?

Yes, but approvals are required. You must obtain permission from the local town hall through a declaration of works and secure approval from the co-ownership association. If you are renting the property, your landlord's permission is also required.

How do you choose the right air conditioning capacity for your home?

The required capacity depends on the area to be cooled. Only a qualified professional can accurately assess your needs after visiting the property.

Is a reversible air conditioner installed differently from a standard system?

No. The installation process for a reversible air conditioner (air-to-air heat pump) follows the same procedure as a standard split air conditioning system.

What should you check when choosing a certified air conditioning installer?

Prioritise certified professionals, particularly those holding Qualifélec, Qualibat, and Qualiclimat certifications.

Does ENGIE provide quotations and air conditioning installation services?

Yes. ENGIE supports customers with air conditioning installation projects and provides guidance, offers, and advice through its home improvement advisors.

What financial assistance is available?

There is no longer any direct financial assistance available for standard air conditioning systems. The only exception is the reduced 10% VAT rate that applies to labour costs for installation work in existing residential properties in France.
